The base in Wamena lies on a plateau on the island of Papua at around 5000 feet above sea level.

Following a great drought and subsequent famine in 1998, we were asked by the government to supply aid to the mountain population. In cooperation with the Australian government, Doctors Without Borders and MAF, many tons of food and medicine were distributed.

The permanent base was established in April 1998. Since then, Helimission has been providing valuable aid with the focus on medical flights for emergency patients.
