Intercom

Imagine you‘re a pilot in a loud, buzzing helicopter high up in the air. The wind is whistling and the helicopter’s rotor blades are spinning so fast that you can hardly hear your own words. How can you communicate with your team members inside the helicopter? This is where the intercom system comes into play!

An intercom system in a helicopter is an independent communication network. It is essential because it helps the pilots and crew to speak clearly and distinctly to each other, despite all the noise. Without such a system, it would be virtually impossible to exchange important information quickly and safely.

But how does this system work? It‘s quite simple: everyone in the helicopter wears a headset – which is like a pair of headphones with a microphone. When someone speaks, the microphone picks up the voice and the intercom system ensures that this voice is transmitted directly into the headphones of the others in the helicopter. This way, everyone can hear everything clearly, as if they were talking to each other in a quiet room.

The intercom system is also important, not only to communicate with your friends in the same helicopter,  but also with other aircraft and the people at air traffic control. This helps everyone to fly safely and always know what to do next!

The intercom system, also known as an intercommunication device, was not invented by a single person, but is the result of multiple technological advancements by various inventors over the years.
