Where A Life Isn’t Worth 50 Dollars

It was Friday afternoon when we heard about a young man who had been shot. Because we are not allowed to fly at night, there was not enough time to complete the flight, so I set off early on Saturday morning with Dr. Justin.

On the way, we were able to pick up someone who guided us to the injured man. I was very grateful for that, because the man was lying in the middle of nowhere. After I landed nearby, Dr. Justin immediately made his way to the wounded man. During the examination, we were told that the wounded man, a businessman and father of a family, had been attacked and robbed by three bandits that morning. Because he was unable to stop his motorcycle quickly enough, the robbers immediately opened fire. Three bullets hit him in the hip and abdomen. The bandits took money worth 50 dollars and all his valuables, including his shoes, and left him for dead. He was found later that day and somehow the news reached us. So the poor man had to wait for more than a day until help arrived. I was reminded of the story of the Good Samaritan. Dr. Justin gave him some medication and ordered that the injured man be flown immediately to a hospital in the capital Antananarivo. After a one-hour flight, we landed at our base, where an ambulance was already waiting for the patient. We later learned that the man was well on the road to recovery.

Thank you very much for your donations which make it possible for us to fly such missions and thus help our neighbors.

Nick, Pilot
